The Best Driving Sims Of All Time

Aside from a track day, the sim racer is one of the only ways you’ll be able to get behind the wheel of a supercar. Unless of course you one day make millions or you become an F1 driver. But even then things are a little different.

Out on the road, you don’t have any form of protection. If you crash in a sim racer, you can hit the reset button, and you’ll be right back where you started. If you crash on the road, well, the outlook might not be so great. That’s why we’re thrilled there have been so many sim racers over the year to choose from.

Whether that was the one you used to play at the arcade or the latest to be released with next gen graphics.

Here are Top Best Driving Sims

Drift Stage

Long before the graphics on sims we see today, there were arcades. A fun little arcade racer gave you everything you need. Get the car, beat the competition and win the race. In a way, they were more enjoyable than the new sims because of the simplicity. You don’t have to worry about what car you’re driving or ever switching up the style. They weren’t the most realistic game in the world, but they sure were fun. Perhaps that’s why there are games like Drift Stage being released. Games that are clearly taking inspiration from that retro style. You can watch a trailer for Drift Stage, the latest incarnation of this type of game over on a site like Retronuke.

Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo has always been marketed as the real sim racer, and there’s good reason for that. The game was handcrafted from the handling of the cars to the look of the game to be the ultimate driving experience. This was true, long before the game ever appeared on PS3. Or, was rumored for release later this year on PS4. In the 90’s if you wanted the most realistic sim racer, Turismo was the answer. It was a game that required painstaking precision and a lot of hard work. It took you through the challenges of becoming a real racing driver with actual cars. In fact, Sony often had to pay a fortune to get the rights for each car model to appear in the game. It was a work of perfection too. One of the games was delayed for nearly three years while the developers made sure everything was right for the player.

Forza

When the Xbox released against the PS2 Microsoft knew they would need a sim racer to compete against Turismo. They were looking for a console seller, and they found it with Forza. Forza is labeled as one of the best game franchises ever to be released on Xbox. It’s driving mechanics are similar to Turismo. But unlike Turismo the game is a lot more flashy. Exotic locations and fast cars from the start make it one of the most thrilling sims on the market.

rFactor

Finally, if you want one of the best sims on the market, we’ve got to mention rFactor. This incredible game is just about as close as you can get to the real experience of driving a car. The physics in the game are a near perfect replication of how a car performs on the road. Of course, due to this the game isn’t exactly easy. Particularly for beginners. But with a little luck and a lot of practice you’ll soon love it just as much as we do. You can also have some great fun with the mods available.

Did you play any of these games in the past? Or, are you still addicted to them today?
